Leatherette are back with brand new single ‘Itchy‘ to mark the start of their recently announced EU/UK tour.

After testing the song live during their second album ‘Small Talk’ tour last year, they decided to record it themselves at home in a completely spontaneous manner, in messy rooms and using cheap instruments (including unlikely ones such as mandolin and bouzouki).”Being eternally dissatisfied, but also tireless explorers, we decided to return to our origins, seeking the expressive freedom that can be found in DIY”. The result was then entrusted for mixing to the usual collaborator Chris Fullard (Idles, Squid), and for mastering to Maurizio Baggio (The Soft Moon, Boy Harsher).

‘Itchy’ is a cathartic breakup song, blending the raw energy of post-punk with the angular charm of new wave. Written from the perspective of an inept and creepy protagonist, the track navigates the emotional chaos of a crumbling relationship, where frustration, anger, and reluctant self-realization collide. The song channels a blend of influences—from The Smiths’ melancholy to the frenzied urgency of The Pixies and the romantic nihilism of Tears for Fears. It’s a feverish exploration of love’s end, wrapped in an infectious, almost grotesque sonic landscape. Finally, it all resolves with a delicate, haunting arpeggio—like the quiet after the storm, offering a fleeting sense of clarity amid the wreckage.

The album delves deep into themes of memory and loss, resistance and rebirth. It presents a dualism, balancing the delicate beauty of ethereal melodies with the intense power of a wall of sound.

Since forming in 2018, Italy-based Mondaze have defined themselves as “heavy shoegaze”, taking inspiration from bands like genre-giants Swervedriver and Ride, but also contemporary bands pushing through the limits of the genre like Nothing and Ringo Deathstarr. With Linger, they aim to amplify the melancholy tones of their frustration and rage. These sonic characteristics drove them to work with Chris Fullard (Idles and Boris) on mixing, and Maurizio Baggio (The Soft Moon, Boy Harsher) for mastering. The result is an album with roots, yet distinctly modern featuring arrangements that skillfully blend contemporary styles with dreamy and eerie atmospheres.

The opening track, ‘Lines of You’, showcases the recurring tension between presence and absence, reflecting how this internal struggle is ever-present in daily life. Haunted by lingering ghosts and memories that refuse to fade, Mondaze’s melancholy isn’t merely a stylistic element—it’s a deep exploration of the collective labyrinths faced by a generation longing for connection. It sounds as powerful as it is necessary in our times. There’s a strength that stems from reflection and observation.

This tune comes with a video directed by Clement Pelo, and it stars Yannis Beck and Benedicte Bonpunt.

‘And if there was one act who did that at MENT it was Bologna’s Leatherette. Playing the elegant Kino Šiška, Leatherette presented an ever-moving set of noise and attitudes that whisked past us like plates of sushi on a conveyor belt.

Today, they share album opener ‘Magic Consciousness‘. This is protest music of uncanny subtlety and power, bidding us to “Disengage the false narrative” over a modern post-punk tune. The band explains: “The magic of consciousness is a stellar gift; the fact that we waste so much of it on lies and misinformation incites Live Skull to make some noise!”

Legendary New York veterans are back! Their new album ‘Party Zero’ – their third since rising from the grave – is one of their finest. Big in sound and brash on dynamics, while sophistication remains an essential element. The fusion of noise and unexpected tunefulness delivering a heady, psychedelic effect. This remains protest music of uncanny subtlety and power, over a chiaroscuro modern post-punk. It’s the sound of Live Skull in the 21st Century: timeless, angry and beautiful.

 

Insurrections. Global pandemics. The return of fascism. Climate crises. These are some serious times. But if you’ve got angst in your pants and you need to dance, or scream, or play guitar too loud too close to your amplifier, turn your ear to what Live Skull are doing. The New York noisers, who went on indefinite hiatus just before their kind of smart, gnarly, inventive din became lucrative, rose again in 2016. Their new album ‘Party Zero’, a thrilling work redefining what Live Skull means and what they stand for: no longer a group with a past, but one with a future.

‘Party Zero’ marks the arrival of guitarist Dave Hollinghurst, an electrifying presence pushing the band in a fresh, new direction. It’s a fiercely political album, in keeping with this politically fierce age. “Desperation inspires us to make art and music,” he says. “There’s a lot of birth and rebirth, looking for pathways of resistance and promoting the good and trying to fight against evil. I once said we had to start Live Skull because Reagan became president. And we had to restart Live Skull because Trump became president.”

‘Party Zero’ is big in sound, brash in dynamics. But the sophistication that was always the group’s calling card remains an essential element, dealing in the kind of pulverising pell-mell that characterised the 80s New York sound, but also radiant with melody, the fusion of noise and unexpected tunefulness delivering a heady, psychedelic effect.

This is timely music, essential, impassioned, angry and beautiful. It’s the sound of Live Skull in the 21st Century, a desperate time that needs heroes like these. “We’ve been pushed to the edge – how do we claw our way back?” asks Mark. “That’s been a common theme in Live Skull since the beginning, and so it is now. We’re trying to provoke thought.”

ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2022 BY CHRIS ANGIOLINI

Ancora una volta è tempo di bilanci di fine anno, ma già in premessa devo dire che è stato un anno in cui ho faticato molto a trovare musiche stimolanti e coraggiose. Un anno che definirei ancora una volta di transizione, in cui il presunto ritorno alla normalità post pandemia non ha ancora trovato terreno fertile verso nuove traiettorie sonore. Ci si è preoccupati soprattutto di riprendere una certa confidenza con la normalità. Artisti e band sono tornati in tour con moltissime difficoltà, di sostenibilità economica e disponibilità di maestranze. Un anno dai ritmi furiosi e dai risultati deludenti. Album come quelli di Beyoncé e Rosalia sono certamente rilevanti, ci sono però 4 album usciti nel ’22 che ritengo fondamentali, a partire da quello di Lucrecia Dalt in cima alla mia classifica. Un album in cui la Dalt si mette decisamente in gioco riuscendo nell’impresa di unire con grande classe e maestria il suo percorso di sperimentazione elettronica con le sue origini sudamericane. Riuscendo ad unire la sua mente matematica con la sua infanzia in Colombia circondata da tropicalia, bolero e flamenco. Al mix il genio di Marta Salogni, ai ritmi l’eccentrico e tentacolare Alex Làzaro. Appena ho ascoltato !Ay! ho capito subito che sarebbe stato un disco dell’anno. Un album intimo e avventuroso. Un album in cui tutti gli elementi trovano un loro spazio e un punto di tenuta nel racconto distopico che li accompagna. Scienza, tradizione, intimità e temporalità si ritrovano così magicamente riuniti in un’unica visione.

A seguire la vera sorpresa discografica dell’anno, il debutto sulla lunga distanza dei Chat Pile da Oklahoma City con il loro God’s Country. Un album terrificante e teso che entra dritto nella psiche del fallimento del sogno americano. Era da tanti anni che non sentivo un album così, che centrasse tutti gli obiettivi senza accettare alcun compromesso. Un album di denuncia sociale con chitarre pesanti e ribassate, ritmiche chirurgiche e una voce straziante che è il vero punto di forza con testi che arrivano sempre dritti al punto. “Più di ogni altra cosa, stiamo cercando di catturare l’ansia e la paura di vedere il mondo andare in pezzi” dichiarano. Negli ultimi anni le chitarre pesanti erano diventate più che altro un esercizio di stile, il riff come un orpello estetico. Bello, ma troppo spesso fine a se stesso. Questo non succede con i Chat Pile e nemmeno con gli scozzesi Ashenspire e il loro black metal avantgarde destrutturato con testi da manifesto anti capitalista. Poi a completare una specie di trittico ci sarebbero anche i Soul Glo che però non ho inserito nei miei 15, ma che sono certamente degni di nota.

Nelle mie classifiche di fine anno come ormai avrete capito, non può mai mancare un album che non veda protagonista Moor Mother, l’amazzone nera che con il suo blues cavalca il tempo e lo spazio. Il suo nuovo album si intitola Jazz Codes e rende omaggio alla storia della black music con il suo stile inconfondibile che nel frattempo è diventato sempre più profondo, fumoso e musicale senza mai perdere di vista quelle tematiche che da sempre costituiscono il fondamento della sua produzione, concentrandosi questa volta sulla ricollocazione della memoria.
Il quarto album di questa carrellata è quello di Kali Malone con il suo capolavoro di drone elettro acustico Living Torch. Un album solenne in cui i drones sono accompagnati da trombone e clarinetto basso, mentre Kali si cimenta con il synth usato da Eliane Radigue, denominato ARP 2500.

Tra i primi 5 c’è poi spazio per uno degli innumerevoli progetti del maestro giapponese Keiji Haino. Qui con i suoi Hardy Rocks nelle vesti di una specie di Jon Spencer Samurai a cimentarsi con i classici del rock’n’roll. Davvero gustosissimo. Per il momento non lo trovate in nessun formato digitale per cui consiglio l’acquisto di una solida edizione vinile.

Questa classifica si compone di 10 nuovi album, 2 recuperi dal finale dello scorso anno (Tonstartssbandht, Constant Smiles), 2 Ep (Burial – Antidawn Holy Tongue – III) e una ristampa (Tomaga – Extended Play 1&2). C’è spazio anche per 2 uscite italiane dallo spiccato sapore internazionale come quelle di Messa e Maria Chiara Argirò, per l’album acustico di Ty Segall che cattura il sound di Topanga Canyon e l’ultima testimonianza su vinile (Anteloper) per la compianta trombettista Jamie Branch. Ci ho riflettuto a lungo su questi titoli e in un certo senso ho preferito non fare concessioni, ma se ve lo steste chiedendo, subito fuori dalla porta trovereste la giovane Sarah Beth Tomberlin, in arte Tomberlin con il suo intimo ultimo album ‘I Don’t Know Who Needs To Hear This‘. 2022 a Year with Bronson Recordings

It’s that time of the year again. 2022 was a year of partial and progressive return to normality and with Bronson Recordings we resumed our production activity with intensity and our artists and bands came back live on stage with a certain continuity. We released 5 incredible albums and as usual we have ranged between genres with the aim of giving you unique and authentic records, never too easily categorized. We could say that post-punk is a common ground, but then it declines between no wave, dream pop, songwriting, dark folk or slacker rock. New records by Clever Square, Phill Reynolds, Eugenia Post Meridiem, Leatherette (a bang of a debut!) and R.Y.F that composed an astonishing Soundtrack. Leatherette are a quintet whose car-crash of jagged noise, twisted love and dark, anguished melody has delivered a remarkable – and eminently combustible – debut album. Fiesta offers release for any who might need it. You can file them near fiery post-punk kindreds like Shame and Squid, or unhinged 90s noisers like Unwound or Hoover, or squalling No Wavers like James Chance, but the truth is there are few bands like Leatherette that walk this Earth.

R.Y.F. – Tutto Brucia OST

Tutto Brucia (Music From The Motus Show) is the original soundtrack composed by R.Y.F. for the homonymous new theatrical show by the acclaimed theater company Motus that sees her as protagonist on stage – on songs and live music – together with Silvia Calderoni and Stefania Tansini.

Morello says she created the music, based on the union between the electric guitar and a more and more free and powerful voice, starting from improvisation, that means following her usual instinct: “All the tracks were born during the natural work in progress with Silvia, Stefania and Demetrio Cecchitelli, who composed the soundscapes. Once tuned to the atmosphere of the scene, I started working on the text with the help of the words suggested by Ilenia Caleo, curator of the dramaturgical research, and by the same Motus, who granted me however total freedom of writing. The process was harmonious, because the music and the respective scenes are very closely connected“. This is why it was decided to record live Tutto Brucia (Music From The Motus Show), during a show at the Triennale, in Milan, in November 2021, in order to represent the fundamental interaction between music and text.

New album ‘A Ride’, like all the best concept albums, takes you on a journey. This one concerns the last three days of an American runaway’s life. Giacomo D’Attorre, frontman dei Clever Square, ha attraversato un periodo di cambiamenti, sia con la sua band, completata da Francesco Lima, Andrea Ferriani e Andrea Napolitano, sia nella sua vita privata. Anche nel rapportarsi molto semplicemente allo stato attuale delle cose. Questo è il fuoco che alimenta il nuovo album dei Clever Square, intitolato Secret Alliance e in uscita in vinile e digitale per Bronson Recordings il 29 aprile 2022, già in pre-order.

L’album è costituito da undici brani, tra i quali i singoli Kites From The Noodle Kingdom, notturno e onirico, con Jacopo Finelli dei Leatherette al sax, e Soccer Rules, quest’ultimo disponibile da oggi 11 febbraio. Brani che esplorano sentimenti di frustrazione, disillusione e disconnessione, raccontando cosa vuol dire essere travolti da un mondo che “diventa sempre più rumoroso ogni giorno che passa“.

Secret Alliance è stato ispirato dalla sensazione di perdere il contatto con chi si crede di essere, nel bene e nel male. Così D’Attorre ha iniziato a scrivere del ripensare sé stessi e acquisire coscienza della propria mutazione, ma anche del senso di inquietudine strisciante nel percepirsi sempre fuori posto. Tutto questo è magnificamente incorniciato dalle melodie stravaganti e intelligenti dei Clever Square. La loro musica è morbida e consumata intorno ai bordi, proprio come la classica camicia di flanella. Le linee della chitarra sbocciano dolcemente, il Rhodes spruzza dappertutto e lo strimpellare acustico suona spontaneo e pacificato.

La musica fornisce un netto contrasto ad alcuni dei contenuti dei testi, ma funge anche da cornice ideale. “Stavolta volevo che i testi colpissero maggiormente nel segno e arrivassero più facilmente a destinazione“, spiega D’Attorre. Il suo stile canoro permette al messaggio di restare in primo piano, al centro; di tanto in tanto devia nei registri superiori, oppure li acquieta appena sopra un sussurro. Anche nei momenti più dissonanti, rimane in bilico e trattenuto lasciando alle parole il compito del coinvolgimento emotivo.

Coinvolgimento emotivo che raggiunge l’apice nel duetto Soccer Rules, nuovo singolo con Eugenia Fera dell’indie band Eugenia Post Meridiem che dispiega la sua voce calda e rigogliosa attorno ai versi di D’Attorre. Soccer Rules è una riflessione intima sul sentirsi a pezzi e sull’incapacità di cogliere la libertà e la pace nella nostra quotidianità. Il video della canzone, con alternanza di paesaggi a colori e in bianco e nero, è diretto da Mason Charanza.

Secret Alliance “è un inno alla privacy, alle gioie della segretezza e alla solitudine“. Secret Alliance è stato registrato e mixato al Cabinessence Studio da Marco Giudici (Any Other), già al lavoro con la formazione romagnola per l’omonimo album del 2019, il terzo album ufficiale senza contare i primi due lavori autoprodotti e i sei EP che ne arricchiscono la discografia. La produzione è di Francesco Lima, chitarrista della band, mentre il master è a cura di Matt Bordin. L’album avvolge argomenti sentiti e profondi in una stoffa di indie rock gloriosamente rilassato incrementando in tal modo la magia e consolidando i Clever Square come una delle migliori band contemporanee d’Italia. Il mondo potrà sembrare sempre più complesso e girare sempre più rapidamente, ma Secret Alliance lo rallenta quanto basta per renderlo più umano e cogliere l’attimo.

Cemento Atlantico: “El congreso de los Fantasmas” è il nuovo singolo e video dall’album d’esordio “Rotte Interrotte”

Per El congreso de los Fantasmas, nuovo singolo tratto dall’album con relativo video, Cemento Atlantico ha utilizzato quattro diverse chitarre campionate in Colombia tra piazze, ostelli e TV d’altri tempi. Le voci sono state registrate a Bogotà, al Monasterio Santa Maria de la Epifania.

In Colombia, alla base della depressione Andina e all’ombra pluviometrica delle montagne, si srotola una foresta tropicale arida di 300 km2. Questo fazzoletto di “terra” è noto come “Desierto de Tatacoa” ed è letteralmente diviso a metà da una strada che separa due diverse colorazioni di terreno: da un lato si staglia un canyon rosso fuoco (secondo solo ai paesaggi di Sergio Leone) e dall’altro una distesa di calcare grigio, popolato da serpenti a sonagli (Tatacoas) e da ragni. Quest’ultimo lato è dominato da una naturale ma inquietante formazione somigliante a un “Congresso di fantasmi”, ovvero un gruppo di individui pietrosi a grandezza umana incredibilmente realistici, nascosti sotto a lenzuoli di calcare grigio levigati dal vento. “Un desierto nunca està deshabitado, ojos hechos de roca, alma grises vigilan la sequìa y el poder incivilizado“.

Dal racconto di Zoffoli: “C’è qualcosa di indimenticabile in questo brano. Non scorderò mai, infatti, la notte in cui ho campionato lo sconosciuto tema principale di chitarra di questa canzone… Stavo registrando la musica di un programma televisivo in un ostello della città di Villavieja in Colombia (dipartimento di Huila), bevendo delle birre con un paio di compagni di viaggio provenienti da Parigi. La trasmissione è stata interrotta da un’edizione straordinaria della BBC: era la notte degli attentati di Parigi del 13 novembre 2015 al Bataclan. Mi piace dedicare questo video a tutte le vittime di quel terribile evento. Ecco perché ci sono quei rumori di grancassa alla fine del pezzo e perché il video è uno strano ‘trip’ di fotogrammi in cui si possono vedere ferite, edifici e linee di collegamento spezzate“.

Più che un album, “Rotte Interrotte” è uno scrigno di racconti messi a tempo a occhi chiusi, nella profonda convinzione che tramite il suono si possa immaginare il mondo senza vederlo.

 

Cemento Atlantico, è il primo progetto discografico del dj/produttore italiano Alessandro “ToffoloMuzik” Zoffoli, concepito tra il 2020 e il 2021, in un silenzio orfano dal peregrinare e dalla condivisione sociale a causa del lockdown in questa era pandemica.

L’album “Rotte Interrotte” è un viaggio ai confini del mondo: Marocco, Vietnam, Perù, Cambogia, Colombia, India, Guatemala, Myanmar. Cemento Atlantico ha rapito Frammenti e Campioni dalla natura, dalla storia, dalla strada e dai luoghi sacri. Successivamente manipolato attraverso l’elettronica, i beats e la costruzione ritmica creando un suono davvero unico e contemporaneo, un vero e proprio melting pot culturale. Più che un album, “Rotte Interrotte” è uno scrigno di storie cronometrate ad occhi chiusi, nella profonda convinzione che attraverso il suono si possa immaginare il mondo senza vederlo.

I Clever Square riprendono a sognare in grande stile con il nuovo singolo Kites From The Noodles Kingdom, disponibile su tutte le piattaforme digitali da oggi 10 dicembre 2021 per Bronson Recordings, estratto dal nuovo e quarto album previsto in uscita per la prossima primavera.

Indie rock genuino ed elegante songwriting melodico, così come aquiloni e spaghetti orientali, volteggiano in metafisiche logge nere, anche grazie alle cinematiche nuance jazzy garantite da Jacopo Finelli dei Leatherette, ospite al sassofono.

Dopo il precedente singolo Little Flaws, risalente all’autunno del 2020, Kites From The Noodles Kingdom continua dunque lungo un percorso del tutto inedito per la band ravennate di stanza a Bologna, guidata da Giacomo D’Attorre (voce e chitarra) e completata da Francesco Lima (chitarra), Andrea Ferriani (basso) e Andrea Napolitano (batteria).

D’Attorre racconta: “Quando io e Francesco abbiamo iniziato a lavorare all’arrangiamento di questa canzone, avevamo in mente sia il sound degli Sparklehorse sia le atmosfere di Twin Peaks. Volevamo che la canzone possedesse un tocco nebbioso e notturno ma al tempo stesso anche delle vibrazioni dreamy e sensuali, che sono ben restituite dal sax di Jacopo Finelli dei Leatherette. É una canzone sulla fugacità dell’amore, sul mettere fine alle cose e sul perdono: va tutto bene, e ciò che non va bene si aggiusterà in un’altra vita o dimensione“.

Kites From The Noodles Kingdom è stato registrato e mixato al Cabinessence Studio da Marco Giudici (Any Other), già al lavoro con la formazione romagnola per l’omonimo album del 2019, il terzo album ufficiale senza contare i primi due lavori autoprodotti e i sei EP che ne arricchiscono la discografia.

Kites From The Noodles Kingdom fa risplendere al meglio la consapevolezza acquisita nel corso degli ultimi anni attraverso un’evoluzione che, dall’approccio lo-fi degli albori, è via via giunta a una forma autorale caratterizzata da somma cura degli intrecci strumentali, sonorità maggiormente calde e un intimismo che comunque sia non rinuncia se necessario all’energia elettrica.

Kites From The Noodles Kingdom è stato prodotto da Lima, in seguito masterizzato all’Outside Inside Studio da Matt Bordin. Restate sintonizzati perché, dal luogo dove provengono i Clever Square, c’è sempre musica nell’aria…

R.Y.F. “Everything Burns” out now!

Everything Burns è la prima incursione di R.Y.F. nella musica elettronica ed è un omaggio a un esplosivo periodo di ispirazione. Con la pandemia che ha costretto i musicisti a uno stop, Morello si è trovata a lavorare meno con la chitarra e maggiormente con sintetizzatori e drum machine, strumenti che ha imparato ad apprezzare grazie a nomi d’avanguardia come Moor Mother e Special Interest.

Se nel sound Everything Burns è un’irresistibile combo di electroclash e punk, da un punto di vista tematico si rivela una radicale miscela di gioia e rabbia. Quarto disco all’attivo, Everything Burns abbatte qualsivoglia paletto di genere celebrando la coesistenza degli opposti complementari. È musica per ballare in maniera sfrenata e liberatoria, oppure per distruggere una stanza dalle pareti troppo strette. Portando avanti, sempre, un ideale di sovversione queer e femminista, contro il patriarcato imperante e contro la classe dirigente che schiaccia il sottoproletariato.

“Questo album è per le persone che si sentono a disagio a causa di quello che sono – perché gli altri dicono loro che sono ‘sbagliate’”, afferma R.Y.F., ricorrendo alla fiction e alla realtà, tra battaglie universali ed esperienze individuali, tra illuminazioni poetiche ed esplicite invettive anti-sessiste, e rivolgendosi a quanti non aderiscono alla visione binaria di un mondo ormai antico, a quanti sono situati ai margini della società. Invitando gli ascoltatori a partecipare a una lotta sempre più importante, seppur spesso dolorosa, per la sopravvivenza e l’accettazione. “Voglio che le persone sappiano che non sono sole. Voglio che si sentano parte di una grande famiglia”.

“A volte vorrei davvero bruciare un sacco di cose, brutte cose che appartengono a questo mondo, a questa società. Patriarcato, omofobia, transfobia, grassofobia, razzismo. Vorrei bruciare tutte le discriminazioni, affinché le persone siano più libere e felici”. Everything Burns è la colonna sonora perfetta per questa necessaria danza del fuoco.
